Frankly, I'm surprised the physician's think the carriers would let them do this. Every managed care contract I've read prohibits administrative fees. I mean, lets face it if the carriers thought their members had another $2k to spend on healthcare they want to make sure they're the ones getting it.
That said, I have a hard time reconciling charging an annual retainer and billing insurance on top of that. The purpose of the retainer is to enable the physician to keep his census low and manageable, but the insurance contract exchanges a discount for a promised volume of patients. They're directly contradictory if I may say so. _________________ A realist is an optimist tempered by experience.
The clinic I work for has offered this for quite some time. I included a description of services offered to these patients below. The program has been very successful and the patients that join love the extra benefits they are paying for. We have over a 100 physicians and only 4 are offering this though.
aiming to change the very core of how they practiced medicine. They were united by a common goal of slowing down the pace of their overly busy practices and focusing on the health care needs of their patients in a more comprehensive manner. These four physicians had a desire to improve preventive care, wellness assessment, and chronic disease management for their patients to achieve optimal health.
patients enjoy the following services:
Same-day appointments – Take care of urgent medical needs today.
Longer appointments – longer appointment times to make sure that your needs are addressed at each appointment.
Periodic correspondence – Receive information from your physician about current topics and upcoming events.
Streamlined registration and check-in – Enjoy bypassing central registration; just head straight to your physician’s office for expedited check-in.
Additionally, patients pay $35 per month for other services that are typically not covered by insurance, but work with the overall practice model to help each patient achieve their highest level of individual health. These services include:
Email access to your physician - Get answers to medical questions, request appointments, and request prescription refills all from your computer.

Fitness evaluation and discounted health club membership - Receive a 60 minute fitness evaluation and recommended program free of charge. Join , a premier fitness center at reduced rates.
Health and wellness seminars - Presentations on a variety of topics geared toward health improvement.
Complementary periodontal and restorative screenings Your results will be sent back to your general dentist.
